- Event is for:
Advanced (flying thermals),
Experienced (flying cross-country)
You are taught all aspects of controlling your wing during the SIV, from deflations and wingovers to stall recovery and SATS, (if you wish). Then, when you fly XC, you have the added confidence and skill in glider control, which allows you to focus on positive things like finding lift and coring, which free's your mind and helps you fly further.
You will be given detailed briefings prior to each flight and in-flight instruction over the radio by Tomas beneath you in the safety boat or on shore when the assistant will be in the boat, and he will carry you in detail each figure. After flying will follow the briefing, where we discuss all day flights and we'll see what we will focus on the following day.
All flights are filmed and we play them during the evening briefing we learn to other flights. Recordings help pilots to improve and understand what is actually happening during the maneuver. At home in your leisure time, then you can look at your figures, which we copy on your flash drive or send by email to download. For pilots is great value after a time to go through everything again and possibility to share their experiences with friends and family is a big advantage.
The idea of this course is to give you confidence in your ability to control your glider, so you must be able to hear the radio and understand the flight tasks you are asked to do. If you are not sure of any instruction given then please ask, we are here to help. We want you to enjoy this course and get a great deal out of it so ask questions and have a positive attitude. If you don't want to do any of the manouvres then let us know and we will change you flight program. We can do any flight manouvres to suit your ability and confidence.
The flight training schedule has been carefully designed to be progressive and maximise your training at an achievable pace, however, you can tailor each flight to your own personal requirements if you wish, whether you are participating in SIV or Acro. You will not be expected to move onto the next SIV flight program unless you are happy and confident to go on. Finally remember that you are the pilot in control and you have the final say with regards your own safety.
We are only there to give advice and guide, therefore building your flying experience and confidence. You are all qualified and experienced enough to make your own decisions. Each pilot on the course must be able to independently take off and land. In case of any doubt or questions be sure to ask.
Ohrid lake is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe and is located 700 meters above sea level. It is interesting that the Ohrid lake is complemented by Prespa lake, which is about 300 meters above the Ohrid lake, and these two sites are separated by 1500 m high ridge Galicica (from which we take off). Springs of water from Prespa lake had to find their way underground where they were thoroughly cleaned and then bubble up to the Ohrid mostly on the bottom. In a case of non-flyable weather, we are about to visit those springs by boat.
And how does that look like?
We all will meet first training day in the morning at the initial briefing in Ljubaniště, a small village on the shore of Ohrid Lake. At the briefing we will check the functionality of your rescue, you will get from us borrowed automatic life jackets, waterproof radio with helmet holders. We'll teach you to treat this equipment. We will go through SIV Course program; we will discuss each maneuver separately to let you know how things are done and what to expect. A trip by car from the landing area (beach on the shore of the lake 700 meters above sea level) to take off on the asphalt road takes about 20 minutes. Take-off is located at almost 1,600 meters above sea level. There is enough space and the take off is sufficient slope for easy take-off. During your exercises over the water, you will be accompanied by a voice of your instructor and cameraman’s eye will follow you during maneuvers. On the lake, you will also be watched by a crew of the lifeboat. You will begin with a simple and easy exercises to understand and become comfortable and familiar with your wing. Gradually, as you'll manage, we will move on to more complex and demanding maneuvers. Your instructor Tomas is individually approaching to each pilot. If the situation requires, we will arrange an individual program. That's about how much you are tired, what you prefer… it depends on how you feel and what you want. For the landing, you can choose a limited area on a beach or a sufficiently large meadow about 100m far from the lake. We will partly discuss your maneuvers immediately after landing, and then during evening briefing when projecting your records.
Because it does not make sense to start with exercises over the water before noon, we recommend to fans of powered paragliding to take your engine with you. During mornings and just before sunset we will be powered-flying around Ohrid and also Prespa Lake.
In three SIV exercise days we will fulfill our program, we plan two spare days for a case of unflyable weather. If we don not use these days as spare days, we will use them based on course members preferences. We can continue with paragliding training over water, or we can move to the thermally very interesting place Krusevo which is located about 130 km (2 hours) far from Ljubaniště. The flight terrain is known for its thermal activity, and its location offers challenging opportunities for pilots of different cross country flights. The less demanding pilots then relaxed flying with an elevation of about 800m. The Krusevo is simple for transportation; there is asphalt road to the takeoff and transportation of pilots with unfinished flights on asphalt road under local ridges of hills is also simple.
